Notez bien que pour tous les verbes, la terminaison est précédée d’un –r.

I’ve just been helping my 11 year-old daughter prepare for an end of term French test. I was ironing and she was at her books. We practised some short dialogues about the weather, transport, time etc.. did some drilling on pronunciation, new words and word order and then the usual recitation of irregular verbs. Two weeks ago another daughter took her GCSE French oral exam. This was a little more involved, we practised dialogues on given topics and I sent her a couple of questions in French during the day as text messages and she responded. Our big area of grammar was tenses.

My reason for describing this is not to give you an insight into domestic bliss in our household or to boast about my dedication to my children’s education. In fact I have two older daughters, now working, neither of whom speak any language other than English (cobblers’ children and all that). No, in fact it got me thinking about language exams and approaches to language exams and what activities might be most productive when facing a language exam.

I’d like to explore first what language exams are. In my opinion, they are simply benchmarks showing staging posts along a journey of developing and enhancing skills. They show that at some stage a particular level of skill was reached. That doesn’t mean to say that someone is still able to demonstrate that level and herein lies the rub! Skills can get rusty if you don’t keep practising them. I don’t see a language as an academic pursuit (the literature and other studies around language such as linguistics, philology etc.. are excluded here). To me it is akin to learning to drive, or playing a musical instrument or even achieving a certain level of physical fitness. Language development starts small and then grows. See how any baby develops language and you will see this. It is ‘additive’ in its nature. You cannot enter at Upper Intermediate level and expect to perform well (let me know if this has happened!). We start with a foundation (however you choose to learn) and then build on this. The more you build the better you get just the like the more you drive the better you become.

OK so how is this important for exams? It is important because language exams in my opinion need a different approach – I don’t believe you can ‘revise’ for a language exam in the same way that you would revise for a history or a medical exam. You need to practise for a language exam and the more practice you get the better you will be. OK this is trite stuff you may think – it’s obvious. If so, then why do I see time and time again students going over and over practice tests instead of getting out and about in the language! Practice tests are more about exam technique than they are about language proficiency. Why do students have a slot in their revision timetable for ‘English’/'French’/'German’ revision? Why do my students, when I return their corrected writing to them, put it carefully in their folders where it never sees the light of day again and why am I told when I set about the present perfect tense for the umpteenth time, ‘we’ve already learned this!’ – been there, done that. The truth is you need to keep going there and doing that and each time you do, push your usage a bit further forwards. If you are guilty of some of these then take heed – you could be making the process far more difficult than it needs to be!

So, some top tips for preparing for language exams:

Don’t make the exam the be all and end all of your language learning. In fact, I think you should be thinking something like “I’ve really made good progress here, perhaps I’ll consider taking an exam.” – rather than -”I need to get FCE, CPE etc.. when can I take the exam!”
Don’t leave your exam preparation until the last minute – make sure you go over areas that you are not sure about immediately after your lesson/online session.
Make sure you do something each day (it’s like learning the piano or improving your fitness level – 10 minutes per day is better than 30 minutes once a week). Try something like Gapfillers word of the day or daily practice.
Do things you enjoy – all language learned is relevant it really doesn’t matter if it didn’t come up as an IELTS topic last year! In your speaking and writing tests YOU ARE IN CHARGE use any language you like as long as you address the topic (and remember it doesn’t have to be true!)
Be critical of yourself – don’t accept mediocre, if you are not sure ask or test it out.
Jump in and try using phrases, words and new grammar the feedback will tell you if you’re on the right track – best to find out now before you use it in your exam!
Use the internet – no excuses now for not having enough exposure. Listen to videos on your favourite subjects (that way you’ll be involved in something you enjoy too). Read, watch, listen, find grammar and vocabulary exercises – bookmark the ones you find useful so you can come back again.
Try and think in your target language – do this during your short daily practice (see my post on Thinking in English – how to make it happen)
Make sure you are a bit better than the exam requires you to be that way you’ll be more relaxed when you take it.
You should use the exam to demonstrate your ability – make sure you have things to say/write. Make sure you learn language that can be adapted to different topics and scenarios
With as much exposure to and practice in the language as possible and an approach to your study that is both systematic and enjoyable, you should pass the exam with flying colours!

90% attendance otherwise you will be barred:(

If class begins at 8:00, you can enter till 8:09.

So, at 8:10, you will be considered as missing and absent.

The French classes will last 90 min (one shot means without break)

From this semester onwards, if you fail a level, you'll have to retake (and not to resit).

This means that you will have an extra semester and no way for you to move further to the next level until you pass this level.

Expression: Être en train de

Pronunciation: [eh tra(n) treh(n) deu]

Meaning:
to be ___-ing, to be in the process of

Literal translation: to be in (the) action of

Register: normal

Notes: French doesn't have a verb form equivalent to the present progressive. Normally, you just use the simple present in French (je parle) to express both the English simple present (I speak) and the present progressive (I am speaking). When you want to insist on the current, ongoing nature of an action in French, you can use être en train de: je suis en train de parler - I am (in the process of) speaking.

The French equivalent of the English past progressive is the imperfect: je parlais - I was speaking. But again, if you need to stress the fact that the action was continuing, you can use être en train de:

J'étais en train d'écrire ma thèse quand le tremblement de terre a frappé.
I was (in the middle of) writing my thesis when the earthquake struck.

Maintaining euphony (agreeable or harmonious sound) in French

In French, there are rules about maintaining euphony; that is, agreeable or harmonious sound. French is a very musical language because it tends to flow from one word to the next with no hiatus (pause). In situations where euphony doesn't happen naturally, French requires that sounds be added or words changed.

As a general rule, French does not like to have a word that ends in a vowel sound followed by a word that begins with a vowel sound. The pause created between two vowel sounds, called a hiatus, is undesirable in French, so the following techniques are used to avoid it [brackets indicate pronunciation]:

Contractions
Contractions avoid the hiatus by dropping the vowel at the end of the first word.
For example: le ami [leu a mee] becomes l'ami [la mee]
Liaisons
Liaisons transfer the normally silent sound at the end of the first word onto the beginning of the second word.
For example: vous avez is pronounced [vu za vay] instead of [vu a vay]
T inversion
When inversion results in a verb ending in a vowel + il or elle, a T is added between the two words to avoid hiatus.
For example: a-il [a eel] becomes a-t-il [a teel]
Special adjective forms
Nine adjectives have special forms used in front of words that begin with a vowel.
For example: ce homme [seu uhm] becomes cet homme [seh tuhm]
L'on
Putting l' in front of on avoids the hiatus. L'on may also be used to avoid saying qu'on (sounds like con).
For example: si on [see o(n)] becomes si l'on [see lo(n)]

In addition to the hiatus-avoiding techniques above, there is an additional way in which French increases euphony: enchaînement.

Enchaînement is the transfer of the sound at the end of one word onto the word that follows, such as in the phrase belle âme. The L sound at the end of belle would be pronounced even if the next word began with a consonant, which is what distinguishes enchaînement from liaison. Thus, enchaînement does not avoid hiatus the way liaison does, because there is no hiatus after a word that ends in a consonant sound. However, what enchaînement does is make the two words flow together, so that when you say belle âme, it sounds like [beh lahm] instead of [bel ahm]. Enchaînement thus increases the musicality of the phrase.

Les questions

There are several ways to ask questions in French.

1. Use your voice.
The easiest way is by changing the intonation of your voice, raising the pitch near the end. (You also do this in English.)

e.g.: I’m eating some candies.
You’re eating some candies?
Je mange des bonbons.
Tu manges des bonbons?

2. Put est-ce que at the beginning of your sentence.

Another way is by using est-ce que at the beginning of your question.

e.g.: Tu manges des bonbons. = You are eating some candies.
Est-ce que tu manges des bonbons? = Are you eating some candies?

Elle mange des bonbons. = She is eating some candies.
Est-ce qu’elle mange des bonbons? = Is she eating some candies?

Notice that que forms a contraction when it precedes a words starting with vowel.

3. Switch the verb and subject pronoun.

The third way to ask a question in French is by using inversion, or switching the verb and the subject.

e.g.: Tu manges des bonbons. = You are eating some candies.
Manges-tu des bonbons? = Are you eating some candies?
Parlez-vous français? = Do you speak French?

When you use inversion with il or elle, you must add “t” between your verb and the subject pronoun if the verb does not already end in “t”.

e.g.: Le bébé, est-il beau? = Is the baby beautiful?
Joël, mange-t-il des bonbons? = Is Joel eating candies?
Isaac, regarde-t-il la television? = Is Isaac watching television?

Ask the following question three ways. Are you eating cake (du gateau) ?

Les trois amis regardent le menu :
- C’est sympa ici, non ? Et dehors, il y a une jolie terrasse.
- Mais moi, je préfère manger dedans. Il fait un peu froid dehors. Alors, qu’est-ce qu’on prend ?
- Il y a un menu à 15 euros 50. On prend le menu ?
- D’accord pour le menu. Tu es d’accord. ?
- Oui, oui, d’accord.
- Qu’est ce que vous prenez comme entrée ?
- On a le choix entre un avocat, un melon ou une salade de tomates. Pour moi, du melon. Et toi?
- Moi, je prends de la salade de tomates. Et toi?
- Et moi, un avocat.
- C’est parfait. Et comme plat, qu’est-ce que vous prenez ? Le plat du jour, c’est du poisson. Du poisson au curry. J’adore le poisson.
- Moi aussi, je voudrais du poisson.
- Moi aussi, j’aime le poisson.

Le serveur finit de prendre les commandes sur son calepin.
- Alors, une salade de tomates, un avocat et un melon. Et comme plat, qu’est-ce que vous désirez ?
- Un poisson au curry.
- Une entrecôte. Saignante.
- Un confit de canard.
- Et comme boisson ? Du vin ? De l’eau ?
- Une bouteille de château Lascaux.

Le garçon s’en va. Le jeune homme se retourne vers ses deux amies et brusquement porte les mains à ses poches.

- Il est sans doute à la maison.
- Ou dans la voiture ! Oui, dans la voiture, dans la boîte à gants. Excusez-moi, je reviens tout de suite.
- Il est gentil. Très spontané, très amusant. Mais vraiment il est distrait. Il oublie tout. Il a la tête dans les nuages.
